Journalist discusses visions of Mary

Newspaper publisher Wayne Weible had a journalist's skepticism when he first heard of an image of the virgin Mary appearing to a group of teens in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina, in 1985.

Like a good journalist, he followed his curiosity, and Weible found himself - and his faith - forever changed.Now, 20 years, 78 trips to Bosnia and five books later, Weible is still writing about the Marian apparitions and messages imparted to the six villagers, called "visionaries." Mary's daily messages to the visionaries usually take the same form, beginning with "Dear children!" and ending with "Thank you for having responded to my call."

Archbishop Resigns

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican did not know the former Warsaw archbishop had spied for Poland's former communist regime when Pope Benedict nominated him last month, a senior cardinal was quoted as saying on Monday.

Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus resigned on Sunday after admitting to collaborating with Poland's communist secret police -- conduct that the Vatican's top spokesman acknowledged on Sunday had "gravely compromised his authority."

Benedict had defended Wielgus in the face of a rising tide of allegations, and the Vatican sent out a statement last month saying it had taken his past into account when it elevated the former bishop of Plock to the prestigious post.

But Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who heads the Congregation for Bishops, the powerful department which decides the future careers of aspiring churchmen, said that the Vatican did not know the truth about Wielgus.

The Pope has not yet personally commented on the scandal. He is scheduled later on Monday to deliver his "state of the world" address -- a traditional New Year speech to diplomats accredited to the Vatican from more than 170 countries.

NY TIMES COMES CLEAN, LATE, ON INACCURATE ABORTION STORY

The story notes “After receiving much criticism, including some last week from its own public editor, Byron Calame, The New York Times finally ran a correction/editors' note today, regarding its Sunday magazine article last April that featured a woman who had been sent to jail for an abortion.” Seems it was actually a homicide – the murder of a baby after it was born. Somehow, the Times missed that detail.
