Goodbye Garden

Garden 1971
Besides Allegheny General Hospital, it's the only business still going in that stretch of the northside of Pittsburgh. Even the bars have long since moved out. It's sad. Every time I drive by there you see seedy looking men stepping over homeless people to disappear in the porn palace. That's finally about to change.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority expects to take possession of the Garden Theatre within 20 days after settling yesterday with New Garden Realty Corp. for $1.1 million. The URA and the theater's owner had engaged in a legal fight that lasted more than six years.

For more than a decade, revitalization of the corridor of Federal Street and North Avenue has been stalled because nobody advanced plans to start developing around the porn theater.

Now let's hope something positive develops.
