I'm contacted on a regular basis by folks from PETA. (People for the Ethical treatment of Animals) They always want media coverage on some racy stunt in order to bring attention to their cause. Last time they walked around barely dressed to protest fur or cheese burgers or something.
I like animals. I also like cheeseburgers. This is not a dilemma for me. I have cat and eat a cow and sleep just fine at night.
I'm sure some of these PETA folks have good intentions. However, they seemed to be greatly outnumbered by the people who are just plain insane.
The local paper in Tyler, Texas reports: "Sheriff's officials were astounded Thursday by a letter requesting Christopher Lee McCuin. the man accused of murdering his girlfriend and possibly participating in cannibalism, be placed on a vegetarian diet to keep him from being "involved in any senseless killing" while incarcerated.
How dare they compare the brutal murder of a woman to a food choice. This is where I lose any respect whatsoever for their organization or cause.
"It is up to you to prevent McCuin from contributing to any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet," the letter by PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich reads.
The twisted logic behind this ridiculous argument is that all meat comes from death. A person could be encouraged to kill by eating meat. "Only in a culture where people routinely kill and eat living, feeling beings would anyone even think to kill and eat a human loved one," Friedrich said.
The cause of death and violence and unspeakable acts in this world are not due one's diet. We live in a world where abortion is accepted and in some cases a celebrated "right". Violence equals entertainment and the value of a person is measured by their material possessions. The weak are warehoused or discarded and self interest determines our actions.
If PETA is really concerned about suffering and death, then I suggest they use their power, influence and media capabilities to challenge abortion. You must change hearts before minds. A society that kills an innocent child can not have a higher respect for animals when humans are disposable.

I've always respected PETA and the work that they do to protect animals, but this is over the edge.
