Pro-Life Update

Tuesday, JAN. 22, MARKS THE DAY IN 1973 when the Supreme Court stripped from Americans our protections from the abortion industry and put our government on a collision course with our own Constitutional guarantees (in the 5th and 14th Amendments) of the right to Life.

The distressing occasion will be observed in the nation’s capital by a massive March for Life, drawing Americans from across the country to appeal to our lawmakers – and to the current members of the US Supreme Court – to restore justice and mercy to our laws governing abortion.

The March will follow a noon rally featuring various pro-life lawmakers, clergy, youth and other advocates for Life. After the March past the Supreme Court - visit those who represent you - they are your voice in DC.

On the web at www.pcuc.org - The People Concerned for the Unborn Child site - under March for Life 2008 on the left side - Bus List - the list of all the buses chartered from the southwestern PA area by County, then by community, with church sponsor, bus captain name and phone number. There is still space on some of the buses - all are welcome to join us, please call captain closest to your home.

Appointments have been made with our DC representatives - these are listed on this web site under bus packet after you have hit March for Life 2008. Also on this page is all of the pro-life votes recorded for 2007 and how each of our legislators voted - good info and also points to lobby with. Check to see how your legislator has voted!!!!!

Tuesday, January 22, the day of the annual March for Life, the Senate is set to take up the Indian Health Care Improvement Act Amendments (S. 1200). Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) is prepared to offer the Hyde Amendment (no federal funding for abortion except to save the mother’s life, or in cases of rape or incest) as an amendment to this authorization bill. Please urge your two U.S. Senators to support the Vitter Amendment.

Persons participating in the March for Life should urge support of the Vitter Amendment during visits to their Senators’ offices.

Currently, nothing prevents the use of federal funds to pay for abortion in the Indian Health Service program. However, restricting abortion funding has been accepted policy for many years. In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Hyde Amendment, and over the years Congress has acted to ensure that taxpayers are not forced to subsidize abortion. The Vitter Amendment reaffirms this basic and longstanding Congressional policy.

ACTION: Contact your two U.S. Senators by phone, FAX letter, or e-mail. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, and ask for the offices of your Senators, or toll free at 1-877-851-6437. If you will be participating in the March for Life in Washington, DC, please be sure to visit your Senators’ offices.

For those unable to go to DC on Tuesday, EWTN will be broadcasting most of the events, starting on Mon. night at 8 pm with the Mass at the Shrine and continuing most of Tuesday.

PA Marriage Amendment - Does Pennsylvania Need a Constitutional Amendment to Protect Marriage? Yes! We need to do it before an activist court strikes down the law on the books in PA supporting marriage as between one man and one woman as in Massachusetts, Vermont, NJ and now even in the heartland of Iowa! Today, attempts to redefine marriage and questions about same-sex unions have occasioned a national debate on the nature and purpose of marriage - It is a pro-life issue because through a marriage of one man and one woman, new life comes into existence. This has highlighted the need for an amendment to the PA constitution. To be enacted, this amendment must be passed by both PA House and Senate in two consecutive terms and then be approved by the voters in a statewide referendum - so the people make the final decision. When talking to your elected PA House and Senate, reinforce that the people will have the final say. Also that they saw fit in 1996 to pass the Defense of Marriage Act - but that is legislation and subject to being tossed out by an activist court - and we all know what activist courts are doing. 27 other states have voted to protect the institution of marriage by amending their state constitutions.Visit your state senator in his/her home district office next week or as soon as possible (take along 2 or 3 friends) and tell them that NOW is the time to protect marriage in Pennsylvania! For contact info or to read more go to www.pa4marriage.org. You can access your legislator's e-mail address at www.house.state.pa.us or Senate at www.pasen.gov

PA Primary Election - April 22 - Are you, your family, friends, church registered to vote? Many candidates are decided in the primary and it is a very important election - Consider having a voter registration at your church. Forms are available to register and also applications for absentee voting. Jan. 22 - day of the March is the first day for candidates to circulatate petitions. As buses leave for the March for Life, on January 22, it would be an enormous advantage to pro-life candidates for State Committee and Delegate to National Convention if bus captains might assist in collecting signatures for ballot petitions. The Republican contest for President is far from decided, and Pennsylvania delegates may well have an opportunity to play a major role in the selection process at a brokered convention. So, please encourage thoughtful candidates to consider running for Delegate to National Convention. (Petitions can be downloaded from Pennsylvania Department of State website).

The Republican State Committee members who are elected in this cycle will serve a 4 year term, This means that those elected in 2008 will be the ones who will endorse statewide candidates through 2012, including in 2010 when we will elect a new Governor, and Arlen Specter's Senate seat will be up for re-election. So this is a critically important effort for the future. Please encourage pro-life candidates to run for State Committee.

Forty Days for Life - Will begin on Ash Wed., Feb 6 - for more info go to www.40daysforlife.com Please consider praying for and participating in this project.

I can’t stress enough Powerball’s point about running for the Republican State Committee. Last election, all 5 elected Butler County State Committee members claimed to be pro-life in their campaign literature.

Like the 2004 Specter – Toomey Senate race, the State Committee endorsement in September of 2007 for either Jane Earll or Jackie Shogan for PA Superior Court was a clear pro-choice / pro-life endorsement for the 2007 general election.

Without exception, all 5 Butler County Republican State Committee members have either refused a written request to reveal how they voted on the Jane Earll – Jackie Shogan endorsement, or have refused to reveal how the other Butler County Committee members voted.

We need “real” pro-life people to run. It only takes 100 signatures to get on the ballot for the Republican State Committee.
