All week I've been driving around closed streets in Pittsburgh's west end. They have been filming a movie there.
I watched as I drove to and from work how Hollywood has come to Pittsburgh. Big lights, fake snow, crew running around, the works.
I had no idea what movie they were making, but I thought it might be neat to take my wife and my son to see how a movie is made. So last night we hopped in the car and took off to the set.
A very nice crew guy said we were welcome to watch and let us stand just behind the director. That director was Kevin Smith aka "Silent Bob" of "Clerks" & "Dogma" fame. I asked the crew guy the name of the movie and he said "Zach & Miri."
So me, my wife and our six year old son take a spot behind the director. With the shout of "Action," Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks began delivering their f-word laced lines. I mean in 6 sentences they used the f-word about 18 times. In complete shock we looked at each other and then at my six year old.
Of course, now we can't really move and they do the scene over and over as I'm whispering to my son "They are playing really bad characters who use really bad words." As I watch this I'm thinking he will never see this movie. So much for teaching him how a movie is made!
Then I find out that the complete title of the movie is "Zach and Miri make a porno." I guess that nice crew guy forgot to mention that bit of information to me as I walked my family toward the cinema magic.
It's wonderful they choose to film in Pittsburgh, it just not wonderful WHAT they choose to film in Pittsburgh.

Add the fact that Pennsylvania approved $75 million in tax incentives for movies shot here, your tax dollars are probably subsidizing this effort. See http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/business/columnists/markowitz/s_542694.html
