You can stop checking the mailbox for that check from Uncle Sam. The Democrats' two leaders in Congress cannot agree. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is endorsing a proposal by GOP senators to let 20 million seniors and 250,000 disabled veterans share in tax rebates designed to boost the economy.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is backing a more expensive plan. Reid on Wednesday narrowly lost a crucial procedural vote to push the Senate's $205 billion stimulus plan toward a final vote in that chamber. It included more business tax breaks and extended unemployment benefits in addition to the rebates for the elderly and veterans.
Pelosi pointedly did not endorse Senate adds-ons endorsed by Reid, such as provisions benefiting coal companies and a 13-week extension of jobless benefits.
You can expect this infighting the weigh like a sandbag on stocks as Wall Street talks us into a recession
