From the story: State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe says he was shocked by letters and postcards bearing his name that are circulating in the county this month -- supposedly sent by a religious group based in Erie with alleged ties to one of the nation's oldest white supremacist groups, the Ku Klux Klan.
"I've never experienced communication with this kind of hate," said Metcalfe, R-Cranberry.
Metcalfe received the documents from a group calling itself "Christian Nation -- Community of Christ Church," which announced that it had chosen him to receive an award for being a "Christian Soldier."
Metcalfe issued a statement Wednesday to publicly distance himself from the group and reject its award. He also decried the group's use of his name in publicizing the award and booking the venue for a rally, Adams Township Community Park
Metcalfe said constituents in his district on Wednesday also received postcards from Christian Nation, announcing the rally and claiming that Metcalfe would be a guest.
Not only does Metcalfe not plan to attend, he's starting to suspect the group may not exist. Metcalfe says inconsistencies in the letters -- incorrect dates, misspelled names and other things -- are leading him to wonder whether the whole thing may be cooked up by his political enemies.
"I suspect that it may be someone in Butler County using this as a political attack, trying to tie me to a hate group to defame my name and ruin my reputation. Read more..
The suspicions appear to be correct. The group’s Erie return address of P.O. Box 1200 does not exist. Erie post office boxes have five digits.
