Sen. Vincent Fumo Defends Marriage

I say go for it!

Sen. Vincent Fumo plans to propose that Pennsylvania outlaw most divorces. Imagine "till death do us part" would really mean you are in for life. If we really want to defend traditional marriage, if it's really that important, then we should live like it is so.

Senate Bill 1250 would amend the state Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriages. This new amendment would be attached to the bill. I know Fumo is attempting to stick it to the supports of traditional marriage but I applaud him. I you break a contract there are consequences. It should be the same with marriage. Let's make people really consider the marriage sacrament before they decide to just give it a whirl. This amendment would "outlaw the dissolution of most marriages in Pennsylvania," and leave few legal ways for the divorce of a married couple.

There are some tragic circumstances where divorce is often considered the most practical option. Mr. Fumo'a plan would provide five specific reasons for a legal divorce: if one spouse "willfully or maliciously" deserts the other; if one spouse uses "cruel and barbarous treatment" on the other; if a person endangers his or her spouse's health or life; if one spouse is found to be a bigamist; or if one spouse "imposes indignities to make the other spouses's life intolerable and burdensome."

I'm sure Mr. Fumo won't be happy with conservative support of his plan. His goal was to put some egg on a few faces. He is attempting to attack the marriage amendment for "taking away the rights of some citizens based on their sexual orientation," as his release states.

Sometimes great ideas surface despite our best efforts. Sen. Fumo, I endorse your proposal!
