Bishop Donald Wuerl of Pittsburgh today narrowly lost an election to become vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, who won, 51 to 49 percent, in a runoff. The vice president is virtually assured election as president after a three-year term learning the ropes.
Bishop William Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., was elected president with 52 percent in the first ballot, despite concerns by some bishops that his diocese is about to declare bankruptcy.
The vote came on the first day of a four-day conference meeting in Washington, D.C.
Editors Note: Bishop Wurel's lack of leadership in our area is of great concern. Until he seeks to truly apply the teachings of the church, he has no place in the leadership of USCCB.
