Gov. Ed Rendell talking about Pittsburgh City Council:
"They're cowards. I wish I could tell you how difficult it is getting them to do anything. It's horrible. Everyone is afraid. If tomorrow we could cure cancer if they raised taxes, they wouldn't raise them." In a conference call, Rendell told Mayor Murphy and city officials he intends to unveil a commuter tax plan even though it's been prohibited by the state Legislature, and he wants to keep our elected representatives from patching any loopholes. Why was he so open about this "secret plan"? Well he had no idea there was a reporter listening to the call! An unknown City Council member invited a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter to listen to the details. Rendell's spokeswoman, Kate Philips, said she could not comment on private remarks the governor made. Well, they're no so private now are they Kate? It makes you wonder what else they whisper behind closed doors when no one is listening.
What all this means is anyone's guess, but we could get a tax hike as a Christmas gift from Gov. Rendell. Hey Ed, I'm still waiting for that property tax cut!
