A powerful Republican committee chairman who has led the fight against President Bush's signing statements said Monday he would have a bill ready by the end of the week allowing Congress to sue him in federal court.
"We will submit legislation to the United States Senate which will...authorize the Congress to undertake judicial review of those signing statements with the view to having the president's acts declared unconstitutional," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said on the Senate floor.

Interesting article! It is a given that without the president’s help, Specter would have lost his primary race to Pat Toomey in 2004. Toomey came to within 2 votes per precinct of defeating Specter, and the President’s help made the difference.
Up until now, it appears that Specter has been willing to work with the President, at least on his judicial appointments. But this story shows that Specter has quickly turned into an adversary. In some ways, I’m not surprised.

You can add Sen. Santourm to that list. I really struggled in my support of him. I know what he did and I support him but I would have loved to see him and Pat Toomey rep. PA.

Here in Butler County, Toomey handily defeated Specter in the 2004 Primary by a 60 – 40 margin. If Santorum and the President had stayed neutral, the results would have been closer to 75 – 25.
Santorum’s support of Specter in the 2004 Primary has dampened Santorum’s support in 2006. He will still carry Butler County, but there is an underlying animosity over the 2004 Senate race that has not lifted.
