Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and his colleagues passed the Child Custody Protection Act S. 403 by a vote of 65 to 34, only to have Senators Reid and Durbin take the unprecedented step of blocking it from going to conference with the House-passed bill.
Now the House will take up the Senate version and insert House-passed language that has more teeth. We expect the House to do this today. What next? It's crunch time, as this is the last week the Senate will be in Washington before heading home to campaign.
Senator Frist and his colleagues who support this bill need to call the opponents' bluff. That means Senator Frist must find a way to get it done, even when there are other important bills to be finished this week. This bill is the most important piece of pro-life legislation in this Congress, and polls show 80% of Americans support parental notification in cases where adolescent girls seek abortion. Majority Leader Frist probably has the votes, but will he and the Senate take the time to get it done?
