NEVERMIND: Gov. Ed G. Rendell today announced he would transfer enough money to the Port Authority to avoid tomorrow's scheduled fare increase and next week's scheduled service cuts.
A fare increase takes effect tomorrow and the most severe service cuts in the Port Authority's 41-year-history are scheduled for Sunday, the latest repercussion of its growing money problems.
That is barring a last-minute reprieve from Gov. Ed Rendell, whose staff hinted over the weekend that he may tap federal highway funds for the third time in two years as a stopgap measure. An announcement could come as soon as today.
Unless circumstances change, however, 22 bus routes and the 52A Allentown light rail route are to be discontinued as part of an overall 12 percent service reduction.
Dozens of other routes will no longer operate on Saturdays or Sundays or, in some cases, on either day.
