Hats off to Chief Executive Dan Onorato for heading in the right direction. Now let's see what part of famtasy becomes real.
Setting property values for tax purposes in Allegheny County and across Pennsylvania is so hopelessly unfair and difficult that a new method for financing local government should be found, Chief Executive Dan Onorato said Tuesday.
"I do support abolishing the property tax, especially as it relates to funding the public schools," Onorato said in a meeting with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial board.
Onorato said he also will back state legislation this year to extend some county tax breaks to school and municipal tax bills, and to further limit the amount of money a taxing body can collect after a reassessment.
