Carded at the Altar

(CNSNews.com) - A bid by a Nebraska lawmaker to expand underage drinking restrictions to include alcohol consumed in church has drawn criticism from Catholics who say it will infringe on religious rights.

Democratic State Sen. Lowen Kruse has introduced a bill that would eliminate two provisions to Nebraska's underage drinking law which allow minors to drink alcohol in their own homes or at places of worship during religious ceremonies.

While saying the primary goal of the bill was admirable, Catholic League President Bill Donahue worries about the implication for Mass. Catholics and some Protestant denominations use wine in their communion services.

Where are the separation of church and state protesters now?????

The Catholic church's past with teens, alcohol is entirely different from this matter. I found a list of all demoninations of beliefs that were involved with some type of corruption.

My church has only the host, if there is wine, you don't have to drink it.

I think its ridiculous to bring up the matter of an underage person having wine and church to begin with.

In the Catholic belief it is not wine you are consuming. It's the blood of Christ.

It's simple to swap wine for grape juice if that's all it is. Same with bread. Yet Jesus used wine (not grape juice)and said "this is my blood" and so the tradition dictates the use of wine.

No one is getting drunk here. Hallucinogens have a direct effect on the mind. If the church was handing ut full glasses of wine to kids I'd be right with you but they are not do so.

It amazing to me we want to put a state mandated age restriction on receiving the blood of Christ, yet the same 17 year old can walk down the street and get an abortion.

No one replies to blogs unless they deal with religious demoninations or problems, especially the Catholic Church, this blog has at least 6 items posted, the rest have one or two and most have none.

I agree with Anon. who said that no one responds to blogs unless they start a religious debate.
