Powerball,
What do we know about Mr. Swann other than he is a former football player and an announcer? Oh that's right - He's a republican and pro-life and anti-gay - reasons enough to support anyone running for office. Maybe you can inform your readers as to why you are supporting Mr. Swann, other than he is running against a democrat.
The free pass given to candidates on both sides based on whether they pass the abortion/gay litmus test has to end.
By the way, do you think Jesus would belong to either party?
Oh I just love questions like this! First, I have not endorsed, nor has Mr. Swann announced his candidacy.
I have heard him speak a few times. He is part of the President's health team and worked on Bush's re-election bid.
I have spoken personally to Mr. Swann about his political views and aspirations and I found him to be pro-life, pro traditional marriage and he has a true concern and love for PA.
This guy has plenty of money. He could be sitting on a beach and not have to give a rip about anything. Yet he is willing to take on the issues that face us all. I admire that.
As for Jesus belonging to a political party.... Based on scripture I'd guess he would be independant but considering his teachings in most cases he would have to vote republican. You asked.
I just want to thank you Powerball for confirming my statement about the "litmus test" for candidates.
With a mere four substitutions, you could be talking about many democrats:
Mr. Kerry or Mr. Soros for Mr. Swann
Pro-choice for Pro-life
Pro-civil unions for Pro-traditional marriage
USA for PA
Also, I do not know how Jesus would feel about having to pick the lesser of - or between - two evils. I do not think He is very big on half-truths, manipulation, and violating the 9th Commandment.
God Bless
The "litmus test" as you call it should be if the person lines up with Christain principles. At least for me it is.
The right to life is the most basic principle. I could care less about a person's tax policy if they don't value life.
My Christian beliefs will not allow me to support anyone who is in favor of abortion or gay marriage. I don't care if you have a D or an R after your name.
All power comes from God. That goes for every elected offical. So in a sense, it is God who chooses our leaders.
I don't know how Jesus would feel either, but he did tell us to submit to authority so the lesser of two evils seems a logical choice to me.
I fully understand and support the "Culture of Life" philosophy. Where does capital punishment and sending soldiers to die for at best - "Nation Building" - fit into that philosophy?
Anon,
Romans 13:3-4
"For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil."
Personally, I prefer life in hard labor without parole, since I believe death lets them off too easy.
What you call nation building, I call a terrorist supporting gathering threat.
As far as your comment about the ninth commandment, I assume you are talking about WMDs. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Saying Bush lied about WMDs implies that he knew the intelligence was wrong in the first place, but told the American people it was right and went in anyway, or that the intelligence was falsified by the administration. Nothing to back up that claim but emotional supposition.
Mt.10:34
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword."
When war is justified is certainly biblical. I'm not going to debate the justifaction of the current war but I would not agree "Nation Building" was our reason for action.
As for the death penalty, the idea that no human community could have power to inflict the death penalty flies in the face of Sacred Scripture.
At God's command, any murderer among the Chosen People was to be put to death (Ex. 21:12). Continuing in chapters 21-22 of the same book, the Lord God commands the penalty of death for whoever is guilty of striking or cursing father or mother, negligently letting his ferocious ox kill someone, bestiality, sorcery, or offering sacrifice to a false god.
In Leviticus 20:27 God commands, 'A man or women who is a medium or a wizard shall be put to death.' In Deuteronomy 3:5 He declares that a false prophet is also to be put to death. We learn in Deuteronomy 17:2-6 that the same penalty applies for any act of idolatry. Death is prescribed in Leviticus 18:29 for whoever performs any of the abominations performed by the Canaanites. In 1 Samuel (Douay = 1 Kings) 6:19, God executes the death penalty Himself, killing seventy men in one blow for peeking into the Ark of the Covenant.
Some will say the God of the Old Testament is harsh, and not the loving God of the New. But it is the ancient heresy of Marcion to suggest that the God of the Old Testament is not that of the New. In Acts 5, St. Peter announced to Ananias and Sapphira that God would strike them dead for lying to the Holy Spirit, and that's just what happened.
