Gov. Ed Rendell and the Republican-controlled Legislature reached "agreement in principle" on a $24 billion state budget last night, and have been able to halve the Medicaid benefits cuts that Rendell proposed during his winter budget address.
In another major development last night, the state Senate, in a 39-11 vote, gave final approval to allowing beer distributors to sell beer by the case on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. If Rendell signs the bill this week, Sunday sales of beer by the case could begin by Labor Day, in time for football season.
