While You Were Sleeping: Politicians Vote Themselves Pay Raises

State officials' pay is going up. At 2 a.m., with no debate, the state House voted 119-79 to approve a 16% pay raise for state lawmakers and even larger increases for other state officials. The Senate followed 15 minutes later approving the raise 27-23. Gov. Ed Rendell says he probably will sign the bill into law. The pay package ties state officials' salaries to what their counterparts in the federal government make or the Philadelphia area inflation index, whichever is greater. The lawmaker's base pay will rise to $81,027, making them the the second-highest paid legislature in the country, behind California's $110,880. The pay would be higher for committee, caucus and chamber leaders.

Don't you wish you had the power to vote yourself a pay raise too, even when you don't perform?

What did they do to deserve this pay raise? Is PA now leading the country in terms of job growth? Is it now safe to walk the streets in major cities? Were they able to have a budget surplus while lowering taxes?

So why do they deserve such a huge pay raise?
