Political Roundup

It's official... Say goodbye to Mayor Murphy. It will be a long goodbye because he still has a year in which he vows to cut spending and continue "expanding our network of riverfront trails and parks". Yeah that's top priority in my book. But he has decided to give up what he calls "the best job anyone could have in America.” Have some more egg nog Tom.

In other news the Grinch struck again. Gov. Ed Rendell sought to lower expectations for property-tax reductions, saying those savings would not get to homeowners until 2007. Rendell had predicted cuts would arrive by 2006 but lost that bet. He expects to oppose a gas-tax increase (although one takes effect Jan 1) and avoid a state income-tax increase in 2005. Rendell praised the passage of laws authorizing slot machines to provide tax cuts. Rendell said slot machines would raise at least $1 billion for property tax cuts and perhaps much more. Most of the governor's major priorities this year were passed after midnight with holidays arriving. Rendell's first budget was 26 weeks late. He reached an agreement with lawmakers on slots on the July 4 weekend. It begs the question did our representative vote yes because they support Rendell or did the simply want to go home?
