A three-day retreat for officials from the state's student-loan agency totaled nearly $136,000, prompting criticism from some lawmakers and policy officials.
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency board held a private retreat at the four-star Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Fayette County, where amenities include gourmet dining, a spa and a 36-hole golf course. In attendance were 10 of the 16 lawmakers who serve on the 20-member PHEAA board, plus agency staffers, legislative staff, spouses and guests. In all, PHEAA picked up the tab for 70 people that totaled $135,637.74.
The June 1-3 retreat took place about a month before lawmakers voted to give themselves pay raises ranging from 16 percent to 34 percent.
