Specter: Register Republican, If Only For A Day

While addressing a group of about 150 college students at the North Side campus of the Community College of Allegheny County on Tuesday, Senator Specter made an odd request. Noting that he barely survived the Republican primary in 2004, Mr. Specter encouraged the audience to register Republican, if only for the day of the primary, to help him hold his seat in 2010.

"The people who vote predominately in a Republican primary are on the far right,'' Mr. Specter said, pointing to a wing of his party that has never shown much support for him.

He won a round of applause as he argued that "this country needs the center of the Republican Party. The country also needs the center of the Democratic Party. This country needs less to be governed by the extremes of both sides.'' Read more…
