After suffering severe brain damage on the job almost ten years ago, a firefighter from Buffalo suddenly started talking again.
Doctors have no way to explain it, but his family says they are taking miracles where ever they can get them.
For almost 10 years, Donald Herbert has lived in a wheelchair not speaking and mostly not recognizing people. On Saturday, he stunned staff at the Father Baker Convalescent Home when he asked to make a phone call to his wife. At which time, the staff put him on the phone and he had a conversation with Linda.
Herbert carried on full conversations for 14 hours with his family.
In the years since the accident, the world has changed in both extraordinary and ordinary ways. Donald doesn't know about the September 11 terrorist attacks. On a more personal level, the youngest of his three sons has grown from a toddler to a teenager.
It's the little things we all take for granted everyday, we miss the most when they are gone.
