Gallup just came out with a poll that looks at moral boundaries. So I thought I'd pose some poll questions to all of you.
Are the following Morally Acceptable or Morally Wrong?
1. The Death Penalty
2. Divorce
3. Gambling
4. Sex Before Marriage
5. Having a Baby outside of marriage
6. Downloading Music
7. Cheating on Taxes
8. Euthanasia (for any reason)
You can post your responses here or in the forum. Please be honest in all your answers. You need not identify yourself.
5 comments:
1. wrong
2. wrong, but civil divorce is ok without remarriage
3. acceptable within reason
4. wrong
5. wrong
6. wrong under most circumstances. I have no qualms with downloading music that is no longer being sold (i.e. rarities).
7. wrong
8. wrong
I suppose this gives me away as a liberal secular humanist, but the only one of these that really *bothers* me is #1, and even that I could probably accept under certain circumstances (and yes, of course #7 is wrong prima facie, but if it's done on the same scale as driving 5 mph or less over the speed limit, I could really give a care less...)
1) I reconize that God has given the athority to the goverment to do capital punishment, but he did not command it, nor does it need to be used, as long as there is life there is hope, so I say The Death Penalty -- wrong
2) wrong -- except in the case of infadality and abuse
3) wrong -- period
4) wrong -- period
5) wrong -- but I feal sorry for the child and that child is still a life and needs to be cared for and protected from conseption to old age
6) depends, payed downloads are morally correct, free downloads where the artist (and if they have a record companies, but many that say this don't have record companies) say you can for free also OK, downloading music for free, that the artist (or more likly the record company) says no free downloads for then no not morally wrong
7) taxes are too high but, I belive it was St. Peter that said to obey the laws, so that they will find no fault with you.
8) Euthanasia -- Wrong wrong wrong (just like abortion is wrong wrong wrong.)
hmm ... I see a lot of moral relativism ... but I also see a lot of absolute responses too. Is a moral code up for debate? or is it universal?
For myself - the moral code is something 'outside' of us and is authored by God.
Here are my responses:
1. The Death Penalty (God given)
2. Divorce (Not God given)
3. Gambling (Not God given)
4. Sex Before Marriage (Not God Given)
5. Having a Baby outside of marriage (Not God given)
6. Downloading Music [stealing/piracy] (Not God given)
7. Cheating on Taxes (Not God given)
8. Euthanasia (for any reason) (Not God given)
Stupid Type-O, I ment to say that downloading music taht the artist and the record comapnys say no to is morally wrong, but I made a mistake of putting a double negative there. Stupid me.
