The Big Announcement : WORD's New Talk Show Host

Jerry Bowyer

Ok, I can finally tell you! Jerry Bowyer will join WORD as the new host of afternoon talk on 101.5 WORD FM. Jerry started his broadcast career as the host of "Cross-Town Perspectives" on WPIT FM. That station is now WORD FM.

Jerry formed The Allegheny Institute and hosts Pennsylvania Newsmakers, PA's premier public affairs television program, featuring the state's leading policy-makers. It airs across the state from the Ohio Border in Western Pennsylvania to the Western suburbs of Philadelphia. This year he launched "World View", a program that airs Sunday mornings on channel 40. He also writes for Crosswalk and several other publications as well as hosting his own blog and website.

I worked with Jerry for a short time years ago when we both worked for the same radio station and I am looking forward to once again teaming up with Jerry to bring an informative, exciting and challenging show to the airwaves. We are currently developing that program and hope to announce an official starting date soon.

I know you will enjoy Jerry's knowledge and style as we continue the journey. Please join me in welcoming to WORD FM Jerry Bowyer.

That's GREAT!!! I have been largely listening to him on 1360 since Minto left! Great that I can listen to him on WORD-FM now!

I'm not so thrilled. Jerry seems better suited for non-Christian airplay. Ever since he left his wife for her best friend in the 1990s and bailed on his church, I have trouble listening to his spiritual views. (See Post-Gazette, May 3, 1998) He comes across less than honest about his blended family, etc.

Ever since he left his wife for her best friend in the 1990s and bailed on his church, I have trouble listening to his spiritual views. (See Post-Gazette, May 3, 1998) He comes across less than honest about his blended family, etc.

The issues of marriage and divorce are very important to the Christian community, no doubt. What bothers me about this comment is that (1) I'm not at all sure, having listened to Jerry off and on over the past few years, that the comment accurately represents Jerry's views on marriage and divorce now; (2) it doesn't seem to provide room for those who have made mistakes in the past to fully engage in the Christian community now; and (3) I searched the PG archives for "Jerry Bowyer" and found nothing for 5/3/98, but stories before and after.

While I don't agree with Jerry on every topic, I was, frankly, thrilled to hear that Jerry will be picked up by WORD after he leaves WPTT. I've learned a tremendous amount from him, and really, I think he's made me a better person. I believe that WORD-FM listeners will equally benefit from him, if they don't - in the tradition of the Pharisee - ostracize him at the outset.

I'm hoping that WORD will broadcast his program over the Internet and (even better) archive his shows. Second best: that Jerry will continue to podcast choice segments on his website.

Jerry is a very smart guy and he is one of the very few rational conservatives on the air. I am thrilled, however, to have WPTT make room for Thom Hartmann, the nations most thoughtful progressive voice at noon. I'm also happy to have Doug Hoerth back on afternoons and will have to flip back and forth between Jerry and Doug.

True, Jerry is a fairly rational conservative, suitable for mainstream airplay, but his personal life is slimy. He is not suitable for "ministry" airwaves. Steve is right. You can't find this article on the PG web archives, even though, as I recall, it started on the front page...Maybe it was an unarchived Sunday edition. I did find this May 12 letter to the editor about the May 3, 1998, article in the PG web archives: "I want to congratulate Post-Gazette staff writer Dennis Roddy for his fine expose of Jerry Bowyer and his Allegheny Institute (``Think Tank's Bowyer Pushes All the Buttons,'' May 3)," so it does exist.

I found the article about Jerry. Very long. The link is:

You have to pay the PG to see the whole thing.

Touchstone -

'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone'

My point is that no man is perfect. It's what a man does after his sin is realized that defines him. Frankly, I don't think you know Jerry Bowyer well enough for you to honestly say you know if he's truly repented or not since his mistake.

Well, Anonymous, I am truly not into stoning. I do, however, agree with the Bible Answer Man (Hank Hannegraaf, WORD-FM, 6 p.m.), that we are called to judge actions and teachings of others, especially those who are in positions of leadership or ministry. Paul condemned the Corinthians for not dealing with the guy who took his father's wife. They had turned a blind eye to the situation and it was infecting the community. If Jerry had repented, I think he would have come clean publicly like Jimmy Swaggart, and unlike Amy Grant who is still acting like everything is o.k. There is a good discussion of this at answers.org/issues/xian_tell_truth.html
