Calls for a boycott of "The Da Vinci Code" are coming from many Christian leaders. I was sent a list of local theatres and invited to join the protests that will be taking place. Many well known and respected Christians have told me directly that this is an attack on the faith, an attack on the Catholic church and I should do all I can to rally the boycott forces. I decline to do so.
After careful consideration, I will boycott the boycotts. All the talk, all the contoversy, the anti-The Da Vinci Code books, DVD's and progams are a publicity dream come ture for Sony. Christians are being used as a catalyst for box office success.
Have we forgotten the swirling controversy over Mel Gibson’s "The Passion of the Christ?" The Anti Defamation League was responsible in part for "The Passion" becoming the all-time box office winner for R-rated productions. Even my words here plays into the hands of Sony’s controversy promotion. We must shift the debate away from Dan Brown to the Christian community — Protestant and Catholic alike.
If Dan Brown is capable of passing fiction for fact because Christians don’t know their faith, that’s not Mr. Brown’s fault. If the millions of readers and viewers of "The Da Vinci Code" knew the Christian faith, Dan Brown would be unable to muddle fact and fiction in the way he has.
If some Christians stay away from the theaters, deciding thier money is better spent elsewhere that's fine, but we must also allow others to go and see the movie out of curiosity or for simple entertainment without condeming them.
I predict the net result will be a positive one, despite all the bad intentions. Anything that causes Christians and non-belivers to consider what they belive and why they believe it is a good thing. God uses all things for his glory.
