BUSH BLASTS NY TIMES

Calling the disclosure “disgraceful.” (IHT) Treasure Secretary John Snow blasted Times editor Bill Keller in a letter to the editor, explaining “The fact that your editors believe themselves to be qualified to assess how terrorists are moving money betrays a breathtaking arrogance and a deep misunderstanding of this program and how it works. While terrorists are relying more heavily than before on cumbersome methods to move money, such as cash couriers, we have continued to see them using the formal financial system, which has made this particular program incredibly valuable.” (Treasury)

In an interview with Wolf Blitzer, NY Times Editor Bill Keller claimed “We're not passing judgment on the usefulness of this program. That's not our job to do.” In the next sentence, however, he did seem to find it his job to pass judgment: “There are, as with the NSA case, people who are expert and involved in the program who have questions both about its legality and about the way in their view of what was supposed to be a stopgap measure has become something permanent.” (CNN)
