A fire destroyed a Catholic church in West Deer this morning.
About 20 to 25 parishioners attending 7:30 Mass at Transfiguration Church were receiving Communion at 7:55 a.m. when someone noticed smoke coming from the eaves, said West Deer Police Chief Jon Lape.
Flames spread across the roof, and Chief Lape said the building, a wooden structure built in 1915, is a total loss. As of mid-morning, fire crews were still pouring water on the building.
