By now you have probably heard that Iran has threatened to block inspections of its nuclear sites if confronted by the U.N. Security Council over its atomic activities. The hard-line president reaffirmed his country's intention to produce nuclear energy.
The move came a day after France, Britain and Germany - backed by the United States - said that nuclear talks with Iran had reached a dead end after more than two years of fruitless negotiations. In a final attempt to reason most coutries are pushing for the issue to be referred to the Security Council.
Iran has a problem. Democracy and freedom is taking root in Iraq and that threatens those who rule Iran. They don't care for the idea of freedom being in the neighborhood.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said a "strong message" had to be sent to Tehran but said she was not ready to talk about what action should be taken to curtail Iran's nuclear ambitions.
I doubt that you anyone will be able to reason with Iran. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed talk of possible sanctions and said Iran will "continue the path of production of the nuclear energy."
"Iranian people do not allow foreigners to block their progress," state-run radio quoted him as saying.
I have often referred readers back to the "axix of evil" speech given by President Bush in 2002.
The President said, "Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror, while an unelected few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom."
He also stated, "States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic. "
Iran was one of three countries on the list of terrorist states that must be confronted. As the U.S. begins to pull out of Iraq we must, as a nation, prepare to support military efforts in Iran. This is the logical continuation of the war on terror and needed to insure freedom and long term peace in the region.
