The Rev. Brendan Malloy, the Capuchin-Franciscan friar who as three-term minister provincial steered the order through a period of significant transition, died Sunday from cancer. He was 77.
Father Malloy's passions came in many forms, the first being a strong devotion to God, but a close second was his devotion to all things baseball, and most notably, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Father Malloy joined the seminary at 14. His parents, Irish immigrants with strong ties to the Catholic Church, were proud of his early decision.
It was Father Malloy's determined spirit which led him through some of the church's most contentious times. In 1971, he was elected minister provincial of the St. Augustine Province of Capuchin-Franciscan Friars, with headquarters in Lawrenceville.
Father Malloy is survived by his brother and one sister, Mary Theresa.
