IMMIGRATION BATTLE RAGES

One political organizer calling it “the beginning of an immigration civil rights movement.” (Washington Times) Bush spoke on immigration. Transcript: (White House)

According to one story, “More than 36,000 students from throughout Los Angeles County skipped classes and marched through streets and on various freeways Monday to protest an immigration bill being debated in Congress.” (NBC 4) The big weekend rally was fueled by Spanish radio. (LA Times) Immigrant/Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger weighed in on the controversy with an Op Ed, writing “We learned on 9/11 that not all those who cross our borders want to share in the American dream. A few want to replace it with a nightmare. If we don't know who is coming over our borders, we won't know what they might do. And in a post-Sept. 11 world, that is a risk we cannot take. Congress must strengthen our borders.” Later: “Immigrants are here to work and contribute. I support efforts to ensure that our businesses have the workers they need and that immigrants are treated with the respect they deserve. We should pass a common-sense temporary worker program so that every person in our nation is documented.” (LA Times) Earlier this month, a poll showed “A sampling of polls reveals that most Americans are concerned about the financial impact of illegal immigration and fret over porous borders, lax enforcement and easygoing policies that could reward or encourage lawbreakers.” (Washington Times) From Rich Lowry: A core element of the American creed has always been a belief in the dignity of labor — at least until now. Supporters of a guest-worker program for Mexican laborers say that "there are jobs that no Americans will do." This is an argument that is a step away from suggesting that there are jobs that Americans shouldn't do. (NRO)
