After a 135-year shopping era, Kaufmann's department stores are closing. Most are already closed. The website is shut down and another vacum in the Pittsburgh retail arena is born.
The stores are being shut down as part of a company merger with the parent of the Macy's chain. It's makes you feel a bit old to think back on G.C Murphy's, Hills, Ames, Horne's, Thrift Drug and Phar-Mor, Service Mechandise, Media Play, National Record Mart, Zayre and I know I missed several others. But hey, casinos are coming!

Will the downtown Kaufmann's be closing too?
I will miss Kaufmann's too, as I do all of the others you mentioned such as Ames, Hills, etc. What a shame.
Yes. All will be closing. The name will be no more. We will be left with a few Macy's and Boscov's.
Murphy's... Woolworth's... {sits in corner wistfully}
These are all companies who either had ethical issues or didn't change with the markets they were in.
Unfortunate? yes.
I don't think that applies to all of them. Many of them were bought and absorbed. I'm all for progress but once in awhile I do take a stroll down memory lane.
If you aren't strong enough to withstand the takeover ... you lose your identity. It's a case of not keeping up - even if it is by design.
