A group started running television ads yesterday accusing Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's leading Democratic challenger, Bob Casey Jr., of not showing up for work in his position as Pennsylvania treasurer.
Casey's campaign issued a statement defending his work record and calling the group "Santorum's special-interest friends." Casey's campaign has said that time he spends out of the office is not a meaningful gauge of his performance, and that the department has run smoothly.
Michael Dubke, president of Americans for Job Security, based in Alexandria, Va., said the group is spending nearly $500,000 to run the ads for two weeks on regular channels in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and statewide on cable. The ads say Casey skipped work more than 43 percent of the time.
"With a record like that, can we really count on Bob Casey to be there for us when it matters most?" the ad asks.
Both the group and Santorum's campaign have denied a connection between them.
