House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Syria on Tuesday for a visit that is seen as part of an attempt to sway the Bush administration policy on Iraq and the rest of the Middle East (New York Times). The Bush administration has accused Syria of supporting terrorist groups, undermining Lebanon’s politics and disrupting our efforts in Iraq. Not surprisingly, the White House is not pleased with this trip (see earlier report from the NYT).
Thomas Sowell opines: All that Pelosi's trip can accomplish is to advertise American disunity to a terrorist-sponsoring nation in the Middle East while we are in a war there. That in turn can only embolden the Syrians to exploit the lack of unified resolve in Washington by stepping up their efforts to destabilize Iraq and the Middle East in general (Townhall.com).

Sounds like shades of Senator George McGovern having discussions with the North Vietnamese in 1971. McGovern told the North Vietnamese that they were in a position to “strengthen those of us in the peace movement.” I think that history has confirmed that this effort was political posturing to strengthen McGovern’s presidential run. I can’t help but to wonder if House Speaker Pelosi is playing by McGovern’s script.
Of course. Al Queida danced when the Democrats won the midterms. The "loyal opposition" party is no more.
