Back in May I reported on speculation that Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was seeking full communion and membership in the Catholic Church. The story was overshadowed at the time by the Catholic conversion of Frank Beckwith, president of the Evangelical Theological Society. Word out of London is Tony Blair is preparing to convert to Roman Catholicism within weeks.
The move has prompted some Catholics to demand that he renounce his previous support for abortion, which goes against the Vatican’s teachings. I would think the man's heart has changed if he is now willing to embrace truth.
Joining the Catholic Church is not like joining Sam's Club. The Church requires that you say at the point of reception that everything the Church teaches is revealed truth. That of course would include all of the teachings of the Church.
Blair is currently an Anglican, however his wife and four children are Catholic. The archbishop of Westminster’s involvement in an upcoming conversion ceremony suggests Blair's process of conversion began while he was still prime minister. A candidate for reception into the Catholic Church is usually received by their parish priest.
According to reports, Blair will carry out his conversion in a Mass in the private chapel of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales.
The Tablet, a British Catholic weekly newspaper, claimed the conversion will take place later this month.
If this is true, I welcome him and hope that his conversion is of the heart and not just in name.
