Rep. Dave Weldon, a U.S. congressman from Florida, plans to introduce a special bill next week to save Terri Schindler-Schiavo from death by starvation by expanding the use of the English common law protection of habeaus corpus to protect the rights of incapacitated people.
The move elevates the high profile euthanasia case to the federal level. Pro-life groups were energized, with the country’s largest prolife organization, National Right to Life Committee, issuing a press release urging supporters to contact their congressional representatives. The Family Research Council also endorsed the bill, with FRC President Tony Perkins sending an e letter that said, "Terri's parents, as do Congressman Weldon and I, truly believe Terri is alive and deserves to continue living. Please call, e-mail, AND fax your U.S. representative to support Terri's Law -- truly life-saving legislation. Time is of the essence."
