Hm. I wonder what would have happened if a member of the opposition party during WW2 had gone to Germany or Italy and criticized the US in 1942... If they weren't shot there, they most likely would have been shot when they got back for being a traitor! I know that isn't the perfect analogy, but they are along the same lines.
