Crucial Decision Time Comes To Mt. Lebanon

After holding fairly steady for decades, Census estimates of Mt. Lebanon’s population point to a significant drop since 2000. The 2006 estimate of 30,836 represents a decline of 6.6 percent from the 33,017 figure recorded in 2000. Why are people moving out of Mt. Lebanon???????

That answer is anyone's guess but my take on it is this. People with children flock to good school districts. Mt. Lebo would be one of them. However, often with good school districts comes high taxes.

Property is expensive in comparision to other areas, taxes are high and the lure of lower Washington or Butler county taxes does not require a long distance move.

Therefore as children graduate and parents face college tuition, it's no longer worth the cost to remain in a top school district with high taxes.

If you drive around neighborhoods in Mt. Lebo, Upper St, Clair, Peter's Twp., Fox Chapel, etc. right after high school graduation will see the annual crop of "For Sale" signs appear. Parent's want an empty nest with lower taxes.

As economic uncertainity sets in fewer people can afford to buy a school district first and a home second.

If anyone wants to slove this issue then we must allow for school choice. Let children who's parents can't afford a home in these upper class communitites attend school there and bring their education dollars with them.
