Murtha Madness

Shaun Pierce

The media is all a buzz over Congressman John Murtha's (D-Penn.) call for the removal of American troops from Iraq. Yes, the guy is a war hero and served this country bravely in Vietnam, but a medal does not make you infallible. While I respect and honor his past service, the guy is wrong.

Murtha denounced the war in Iraq more than a year ago. He has been expressing disgust with the Bush administration and their prosecution of this war since six months after it started. Yet the story now is a big war supporter is jumping ship. It's a lie.

Murtha has the right to express his opinion as all Americans do. However, I'm appalled that he would use his office to undermine the efforts of our troops. For an elected official to stand in front of the cameras and say "Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk" is irresponsible and endangers our troops. Once that soundbite plays around the world, it will only serve to embolden the enemy. Congressman Murtha should hang his head in shame.

If any lesson was learned in Vietnam, it's politicians need to stay out of the way, and let the troops get the job done. Congressman Murtha of all people should know that.

Mutha's comments, "The future of our military is at risk. Our military and their families are stretched thin" is an invitation for more acts of terrorism. A perception of weakness endangers us all.

I would much rather see the war on terror, the war for oil, the war on Islam or whatever war label you want to put on it, fought in Iraq rather than on our soil. I don't care how long it takes. Our troops coming home right now would not end the war. It would mean the terrorists would have to travel a bit further. The front line is in Iraq. On 9/11 it was in New York. Let's keep things the way they are Congressman. Step aside and let our troops finish the job.

This guy really bruises my neck meat.

First off, the President is out of the country. Criticizing him while abroad is just plain low class.

Second, as you said, Powerball, he is emboldening the enemy, which is going to cause more bloodshed. The blood of many a soldier is on the lefts' hands.

Third, how is "the future of our country" at risk???

The time to argue about a war is before it starts. Once the shooting starts, shut up and line up behind the troops.

On a side note, the Bush administration REALLY needs to start doing a better job of bringing its message to the people, especially in light of the new WMD evidence.

Oy. Here we go again.

however Americans don't feel any safer because of it.
Translate: YOU don't feel any safer. Your opinion doesn't represent everyone.

The "threat" of terrorism has been hammered into our heads, even though nothing has happened to the U.S. since 9/11, and probably won't.

Nothing like a little self contradiction, almost in the same breath.

simple - when the American people are scared, they put all their trust into the government (or President) to do what is in their best interest - which is exactly what this administration wants.

Nothing quite like simplistic emotional supposition to drive home one's point. 9/11 showed us that terrorism is real. It happened in Spain. It happened in London. It happened countless other places since 9/11. Still, left wing conspiracy theories are quite entertaining, so by all means, keep them coming.

What Mutha said was the truth, and there is nothing wrong with using his office to stand up for our military and tell it like it REALLY IS.

Like most liberals, you confuse "your opinion" with what "really is," one of the side effects of everything being called subjective. Talk to the members of the military. THEY will tell you what "really is." Things are going a lot better than what the media is portraying.

I know many conservatives are in denial of this fact, and I know that this is a fact.
More emotional subjectivism. Gotta love it.

Our military and their families ARE stretched thin.
Our military is not stretched thin. And their families? If they didn't want to put their families in this situation, they shouldn't have enlisted. We have a volunteer military. Their purpose is to go to war, kill, and break things when called to do so. The military is not a jobs program or a college scholarship.

I know numerous people who have served or have family that served in Iraq. They are very proud to have served their country, however they have a hard time coming to terms with the morality of this war, along with the reasons we went to war in the first place.

So do I, and they paint a RADICALLY different picture than the ones you supposedly know. And it isn't their job as soldiers to question the reasons for the war. Their job is to fight a war and win!

We're fighting the 2nd Vietnam war on different turf.

The mainstream media wants us to believe this is the case. However, it isn't.

Did it pay to fight communism? No.

Yeah, that's why the Soviet Union has continued to spread, and communism is now everywhere... oh wait! My bad, IT ISN'T!!! As for Veitnam specifically, two Democrat presidents fought the war where the goal wasn't to win. A Republican president pulled us out. I could go into many reasons why they weren't in it to win, and why they were wrong, but I honestly don't have time.

Will it pay to fight terrorism? No. Terrorists are everywhere.

I completely disagree. However, I think Bush is being too soft on terrorists to be completely effective.

This proves that this is not a war over terrorism - it's a war to secure oil, whether you want to call it that or choose to believe that or not, that's the truth.

When I hear this line, or that we went into Iraq because "Bush lied", I dismiss the person saying it as an uninformed fool. You are hereby dismissed.

Leave Congressman Murtha ALONE!! Finally someone in authority speaks out on the feelings of this country and He is now a shame to our country? Come on now, all Murtha did was speak out what many americans think. Especially the families that mourn the lost of an American Miilitary Person. Murtha can't discredit President Bush, he already did a fine job doing that to himself. Yes, President George Bush Lies A Lot!!!
My opinion, we can't change the way the people of Iraq think in just a few months. They did'nt ask for democracy, Bush is enforcing and pushing it on them. They are destroying themselves with bombs and they are taking our American Military with them. They went over there, KICKED BUTT, and now should be allowed to come home. After WWII, did we hang around to live there and change their opinions and government? NO!! Our men came home (only to be treated like a red headed step child by their own government). Ooops did I say that? Let our men and women, that are fighting more for their lives than some government issues, be able to come back to the country the can feel safe in. And if the government wants to solve Iraq's problem, let them stand on the frontline. Then we will see what will really happen. They'd run back to America so fast it would make your head swim. They would want to come home too and would come Hell or High Water. Hopefully, Murtha got a point across and the American people will back him up and listen.
