As the Burg' Turns

state grand jury has accused eight people of running a wide-ranging narcotics trafficking network that reached inside the Allegheny County Treasurer's office and the Allegheny County Jail.

The presentment, released this morning, names two former employees of the treasurer's office, including the onetime chief deputy, two jail guards, as well as a former emergency room doctor at Aliquippa Community Hospital in Beaver County.

Grand jurors said Dr. Alan Egleston, of New Wilmington, Lawrence County, wrote phony prescriptions that put more than 21,000 Ocycontin tablets on the streets of Allegheny and Beaver County. The jury also received testimony that indicated that two suspects, Pasquale Capizzi, onetime chief aid to Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein, and Thomas Welsh, another treasurer's office employee, were fired, but apparently not prosecuted, for dealing drugs inside the county office at least a year before they came to the attention of state investigators.

Meanwhile.....

Former Allegheny County Sheriff's Deputy Captain Frank Schiralli was sentenced to 26 months in prison this morning for lying to a grand jury.

Mr. Schiralli, 53, of McKees Rocks, was convicted in September of lying to a federal grand jury investigating corruption in the sheriff's office. Specifically, Mr. Schiralli said he did not keep lists of sheriff's deputies who contributed to Sheriff Pete DeFazio's campaign fund.

Egleston states history of two incidents of prescription pad thefts... both incidents timely reported to authorities.

Doctor's ability to put facts out to public no match against widespread news coverage. This well-known and respected physician grew up in a rural commnunity which his family and he served selflessly. We knew them as faithful Christians who regularly attended church and graciously gave of their time.
