Embryonic Cloning 'Embedded in Lies"

As a probe gets underway in South Korea into claims of fraud in "landmark" human embryonic cloning research, an ethicist opposed to the controversial work argued Monday that the entire field is characterized by deceit. At the same time, others argue that the only way to prevent a recurrence of the unraveling Korean scandal is for the U.S. government to change tack on funding embryonic stem cell research.Irrespective of whether South Korean cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk is found to have lied about his cloning successes, the work would still be "embedded in lies," said David van Gend, an Australian spokesman for the World Federation of Doctors who Respect Human Life and Do No Harm, a group supporting ethical medical research.
