Have you ever received a campaign mailer slamming a Republican candidate, and then notice that the mailer was paid for the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee? During the 2006 spring primary election, the PA GOP mailed dozens of hit pieces against Republican candidates in an all out effort to protect pay-jacking incumbents. The saturation was so thick that some voters were receiving two and three hit pieces in the mail per day leading up to the primary election.
The average voter would assume that the contents of these mailers were approved by a vote of the PA GOP membership. However, there were no PA GOP votes to approve these mailers.
Dave Majernik, a Republican State Committee member from Plum Borough, has submitted a resolution to ban negative mailings against fellow Republicans from the State Committee. It will be voted upon by the Resolutions Committee today (Friday) and by the State Committee on Saturday. This reform is sorely needed.
