Dem: State Faces Up To $2 Billion Deficit

Pennsylvania faces a budget shortfall of up to $2 billion, a House Democratic leader said today. House Majority Whip Keith McCall, D-Carbon County, said fixing that budget hole has to be the top priority for Democrats, though the party has several other issues it wants to address. Democrats took control of the House in January for the first time in 12 years.

Republicans projected a $2 billion shortfall early last month, when Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell announced his budget. The state must have a balanced spending plan in place by June 30. Read more..

It is telling that both Democrat and Republican leadership agree on the size of the deficit, but the Governor’s office claims the deficit is much less. This projected deficit amounts to about $500 per PA household. Hold onto your wallets.
