The Pastor As A Warrior

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Institute was in town last night for the “Friends of the Family” banquet hosted by the Pennsylvania Family Institute. His moving presentation covered God’s calling in our lives, and “stepping out” in faith.

He detailed the fascinating story of Mark and Frederick Muhlenberg, two brothers who were pastors at the onset of the Revolutionary War. Mark Muhlenberg left the pulpit in dramatic fashion and to help fight in the war. His brother Frederick, initially criticized Mark’s decision, but later also joined in the fight.

Perkins also detailed how in the book of Numbers, Phinehas (Aaron’s grandson and a Levite priest) stopped a plague in Israel’s camp by taking a javelin and running it through a couple engaged in fornication.

The Pastor as a Warrior image can run counter to our preconceived notion of the clergy. John Donvan of ABC News asks, “Christian Men...Too Wimpy?” Donvan writes, “…the men were ready to take up the challenge of becoming a "Christian warrior" modeled on the "manlier" version of Christ they were told has been overlooked — the Christ who took a whip to moneychangers, and used the word "dung" when he had to.” Read more..
