Forget Black History Month

Black activist Jesse Lee Peterson has announced his opposition to Black History Month, saying such an observance is outdated and diverts attention and resources from combating real problems in the African-American community.

"According to the latest study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, blacks now make up more than half of the new AIDS virus infections," Peterson, the founder of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, or BOND, said in a statement. "Yet, civil-rights organizations like the NAACP are focused on celebrating black history while ignoring black misery. To spend an entire month promoting the idea of black history is foolish."

"Unless we as blacks begin to face the grim realities of immorality, AIDS, crime and a host of other problems facing our communities, we won't have a future or a history to talk about," Peterson said. The activist also says Black History Month is divisive.

"Black history is American history and needs to be treated as such," Peterson stated. "The idea of a separate month for black history in this day and age is divisive and unnecessary."

I think BHM is a load of crap, in the UK we celebrate it in October and in the states you do it in February, why the hell is not in the same month internationally when we are all apparently celebrating the same thing. It just leads to confusion, and not just that, what the hell are we celebrating???
The past, the majority of us don't know where the hell we come from, we aren't here celebrating our origins or our past kings/queens or even achievements, the fact that slowly we are dying out in lands that we cannot freely call our own and even if some of us can, there are those who will tell us to go back to where we came from..wheres that, its white mans history that keeps that from us, why, are they scared that we will want to go back to where we come from and decide that we'd rather fix up home than a country where we apparently don't belong!!!
Until blacks assert themselves and come together as one people there will never be a future or past worth celebrating, until history is taught in our schools without any bias or prejudice, rascism or discrimination we are going to get no where, children will continue to grow up misguided and confused, what history are we celebrating, except the one that refuses to let us grow, individually or as a whole??????
