Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt has put Diane Briars, the district's top math and science officer, on leave, saying she didn't have the state certification needed for her job.
Diane Briars, 54, of Fox Chapel, a nationally known math expert who defended the district's Everyday Mathematics curriculum against criticism from some school board members, is being paid during the leave, which began last week.
In a written statement, Mr. Roosevelt said the board will decide Dr. Briars' fate.
"Dr. Briars has not been successful in obtaining the necessary certification to continue in her supervisory role over the district's mathematics staff and programs," he said. "We regret that this action has become necessary."
