Cartoon Jihad
The editor-in-chief and opinions page editor of the University of Illinois’ student newspaper, the Daily Illini, have been suspended by the paper’s publisher for printing six of the 12 infamous cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that sparked Muslim outrage around the world.
Acton Gorton, the suspended editor-in-chief, approved the publication on February 9. Muslim students and sympathizers held an on-campus protest Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the publisher announced the suspensions.
"We did this to raise a healthy dialogue about an important issue that is in the news and so that people would learn more about Islam,” he said. "Now, I’m basically fired.”
The vast majority of mainstream media outlets refused to republish the cartoons – one of which depicted Muhammad with a bomb on his head. But other student newspapers have published the cartoons without harsh consequences, including the University of Wisconsin, Harvard University, University of Northern Illinois, and Illinois State University.
