An extended budget impasse could put 26,000 state employees temporarily out of work, and curtail operations at state parks, museums and environmental permitting, a top aide to Gov. Ed Rendell warned lawmakers Thursday.

This is the first budget showdown where the governor does not have his Republican legislative leaders working on his behalf to peal off enough Republican votes to insure passage. These leaders have either been voted out of office (Brightbill and Jubelirer), or had their leadership positions stripped away (Perzel).
