Media: The Steeler "Defense"

I really don't want to be the one to toss any negative coverage towards the Steelers right now. However, I have detected a hands off attitude when it comes to negative media coverage and sports teams in Pittsburgh.

Sure, you will get the stories that won't stay quiet. Like the Bettis story from 2002. No charges were filed against Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis after a 2002 sexual assault accusation. The district attorney in Westmoreland County, Pa., said he found evidence of a scheme to entrap Bettis and extort money. That one made it into the media because his was innocent and a nice guy.

Yet there are so many stories that everyone seems to know about, yet there is never a peep out the media here.

Look, I don't like dealing in rumors, but I also think news is news be it bad or good. The lastest example of the Pittsburgh media putting their head in the sand happened yesterday.

That guy in the picture is none other the our starting QB Ben Rothlisberger. Notice the t-shirt! The guy is doing "Drink Milk" ads, Somehow I doubt is refering to calcium intake with that shirt.

Ben, wear what you want but know people are watching. I thought this would cause a bit of a stir. It even made the Drudge Report. WTAE did a story that has since disappered. It was gone not long after it went up. My question is why?

These guys makes millions of dollars and they represent our city. We should hold them to a high moral standard and not close our eyes when they fail. To the members of the Pittsburgh media, start reporting the whole truth.

Typically, Drudge pulls down stories when (1) it's not that interesting and/or (2) more information is revealed to contradict the story, like the case with the Beaver student and the Denver jersey. I didn't see WTAE's article, so I can't confirm the truth of the story, and it sounds like you can't either.

But, really, what's the story here? That Ben R. wore a t-shirt that may be objectionable? That's hardly a news story. Besides, for all we know, the t-shirt Ben R. is wearing reads: Drink like a champion: so don't drink. Probably not, but the point is that we don't know.

So actually, Shaun, with all due respect, you are simply dealing in rumors right now. And it's a non-story anyway! Don't mistake juicy gossip for news. Leave that to the supermarket tabloids.

I knew that accusation was coming. The thing is I know of 3 huge stories that have been scrapped that involve the Steelers. These are confirmed stories. The problem is the people who confirmed them will not go on the record.

Notice I did not post this yesterday. I waited to confirm some facts. I even contacted Matt Drudge.

I really don't care what shirt Ben wears and I have no desire to dela in tabloid stuff. What I don't like is how the media is hushed on certain stories and they go along with it.

That's my true concern. This is just the latest example. Albeit minor.
