Disregarding an important component of the Civil Rights Act, Jason Altmire yesterday voted against legislation that would fully protect the rights of faith-based organizations that administer Head Start programs.
By voting no on Roll Call Vote 284, Altmire took away the ability of faith-based institutions to consider religion when hiring and to maintain their religious character and symbols.
Section 702(a) of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended in 1972 states:
“This subchapter shall not apply ... to a religious corporation, association, educational institution, or society with respect to the employment of individuals of a particular religion to perform work connected with the carrying on by such corporation, association, educational institution, or society of its activities.”
Faith-based organizations that participate in federal early childhood education programs should be guaranteed the same protections they have in other federal initiatives. Jason Altmire's vote denies them that right.
