Lay group identifies "problematical" Catholic commencement speakers

(CWNews.com) - An American lay group is asking the heads of 11 Catholic colleges and universities to withdraw invitations to speakers and honorary-degree recipients who have taken public stands incompatible with Church teachings.

The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS), a Virginia-based group dedicated to preserving the Catholic identity of Church institutions of higher learning, has identified a number of speakers and commencement honorees who have publicly advocated for abortion rights, embryonic stem-cell research, physician-assisted suicide, homosexual marriage, women’s ordination, or other issues contrary to Catholic principles.
